Ananth Chaturdashi Vrat is offered to Anath Padmanabha Swamy, a form of Lord Vishnu. As per Hindu Calendar, Ananth Chaturdashi or Ananth Chaudas generally falls on the fourteenth day of Bhadrapada Shukla paksha. In some areas of India such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, Ananta Padmanabha Chaturdashi is performed on the day of Sarvajanik Ganesha Visarjan.

On this day, Lord Vishnu appears as Anantha Padmanabha which is displayed as Lord Vishnu leaning back on Serpent Ananta. Sri Krishna suggests Yudhishthira carry out Ananta Vrata for fourteen years in order to gain his lost kingdom back. Hence, People believe that those who have lost their respect, fame, wealth, etc can be gained back by performing Ananth Chaturdashi Vratam. Devotees fast from Sunrise to Sunset on his auspicious day.

Anantha means “Endless” and devotees believe that by observing this vrat Lord Vishnu will free them from all sorrows, and difficulties in their lives if followed in a holy manner. Some devotees observe Anantha Padmanabha Vratam for 14 years. Lord Vishnu can be seen reclining on Anantha representing the inactive form of Lord Vishnu before the creation of the world.

In Maharashtra, People perform different poojas with Vishnu puja, SatyaNarayan Puja, Krishna puja, Yamuna Puja, Shesha Puja and Anant Puja. A Kalash full of water is considered the Yamuna, Shesha is made up of grass and Anant has 14 threads that are knotted. This is also known as Anantha Dharam. The tying of Anantha Dharma is considered as the main ritual of Ananth Chaturdashi. Women tie the Dharam on their left hand and men on their right hand.

The number Fourteen holds utmost significance on this day and hence the pooja is offered with 14 flowers, 14 fruits, 14 dry fruits, and 14 types of leaves. Food is also prepared with 14 types of vegetables and grams. 

For the year 2022, Anatha Chaturdashi will be observed on Friday, the 9th of September.
