In less than a fortnight, Deepawali, arguably the biggest festival in India, will arrive. The culmination of the five-day celebrations is Bhai Dooj, a unique holiday that honors the relationship between siblings.

The festival of lights, also referred to as Deepawali traditionally is observed on the Amavasya Tithi, or the New Moon Day, in the Kartik lunar month. However, Govatsa Dwadashi, Dhanteras, Yama Deepam, or Naraka Chaturdashi come before and Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj come after Diwali celebrations.

The first day of the Diwali festival in India is known as Dhanteras or Dhanatrayodashi. In the Ashvini month of the Hindu calendar, it is observed on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight). Dhanvantari, who is also honored on the occasion of Dhanteras, is regarded as the Ayurvedic deity who gave the science of Ayurveda to mankind in order to improve it and lessen its suffering from illness. To welcome the new year, Gujarati households typically eat malpua and daal baths.

• Trayodashi Tithi concludes on October 23, 2022 at 06:03 PM.

It’s interesting to note that individuals organize their homes, get new clothing, and make a number of other preparations before the historic day. Additionally, over the course of the five-day event, people indulge in mouthwatering traditional sweets, light oil lamps, exchange sweets and savory treats with friends and family, and even set off firecrackers. Indians will celebrate this happy event in just over a fortnight.

Dhanteras in 2022:

Dhanteras marks the start of Diwali celebrations (also known as Dhanatrayodashi). On the Trayodashi Tithi (thirteenth day), Krishna Paksha Kartik, people celebrate Dhanteras, also known as Dhan Trayodashi (the thirteenth day during the waning phase of the Lunar cycle in the month of Kartik.)

However, Govatsa Puja on Dwadashi Tithi is where some states’ Deepawali celebrations kick off.

Diwali in 2022:

Diwali celebrations will start on October 22 On the Amavasya Tithi of the Kartik month, people light clay lamps to chase away the night and commemorate Lord Rama’s homecoming to Ayodhya with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman.

After fourteen years of exile, Shri Rama returned to Ayodhya on Kartik Amavasya Tithi. As a result, people celebrate his return home by lighting oil lamps in their houses, streets, and other public spaces.
