The Jagannath Temple is an important Hindu temple devoted to Jagannath, a form of Vishnu – one of Hinduism’s three greatest divinities. Puri is located on the eastern coast of India in the state of Odisha. The current temple was built from the 10th century on the location of previous temples in the compound but not the main Jagannatha temple, and was started by Anantavarman Chodaganga, of the Eastern Ganga dynasty.

The Puri temple is well-known for its annual Ratha Yatra, or chariot festival, in which the three main deities are drawn on massive and beautifully decorated temple cars. Unlike most Hindu temples’ stone and metal icons, the image of Jagannath (which inspired the English term ‘juggernaut’) is made of wood and is ceremoniously replaced every twelve or 19 years by an exact replica. It is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.
