Govardhan puja Significance:

Govardhan Puja is a significant Hindu festival honoring Lord Krishna. It falls on the first lunar day of the “Shukla Paksha” in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik, while it is the first day in the Vikram Samvat calendar. This is also the day after Diwali, or Deepawali, or the festival of lights. Govardhan Puja is often referred to as the Annakut festival.

Govardhan Puja Mythology:

Govardhan Puja commemorates the mythological account of Lord Krishna raising Govardhan Hill to shelter inhabitants from the excessive rains that were pounding the area. To this day, the event is commemorated as a show of thanks to Lord Krishna. It represents seeking refuge in the Lord during a crisis and how Lord Krishna never fails to assist his devotees in times of need. Rituals for Govardhan puja:

The rituals involved with Govardhan puja change depending on the sects of Hinduism. On this unique day, Lord Agni, Indra, and Varuna, the gods of Fire, Thunder, and the Oceans, are also worshipped in several regions. This day is associated with several rites, some of which are listed below:

1. On this day, a pile of cow dung shaped like the mountain Govardhan is built and decked with flowers. Water, incense sticks, fruits, and other oblations are offered during the pooja.
2. On this day, animals such as bulls and cows that aid in agriculture are honored.
3. On this day, Govardhan Giri mountain is worshipped as a god in its own right. A cow dung model is built and set on the ground. A clay lamp is set on it, and various oblations such as crystallized sugar, honey, curd, milk, and Ganga water are produced.
4. On this day, Lord Vishwakarma, the god of talented craftsmen, is also worshipped. Offerings and poojas are performed for equipment and machinery in enterprises and factories.
5. Feasts known as “Bhandara” are held in temples across the country and distributed as prasad to followers.
6. Making revolutions around the cow dung mountain that represents Govardhan is a crucial part of the Govardhan puja. It is accomplished by simultaneously praising the god Govardhan. After the required revolutions have been accomplished, barley is planted on the ground.
7. As a sacrifice to Lord Krishna, Annakoot, a mixture of several bowls of cereal, is also prepared on this day.
8. The mountain of Govardhan is thought to be in the district of Mathura in the state of Uttar Pradesh. As a result, lakhs of devotees visit Govardhan Parvat and make revolutions around the mountain to seek Lord Krishna’s blessings and express their thanks.
