History of Akshaya Tritiya in Mahabharatha:
During their exile in forests, the Pandavas always lack food for themselves and for any saints that visit them. Then Yudhistira the eldest among the Pandavas did Japam to Lord Surya, who gave him the Akshaya Patra, with the power of Akshaya Patra, Draupadi fed unlimited peoples in a day. The Akshaya Patra cannot be emptied until Draupadi ate. Pandavas were happy because they can survive in the forests and feed sages that visit them without any worries as they have the Akshaya Patra in their possession.

Once Duryodhana and Shakuni asked sage Durvasa and his disciples to visit Pandavas after Draupadi ate her meal. So Durvasa and his disciples visited the Pandavas as requested by Duryodhana and Shakuni. As Draupadi had her meal already, Pandavas didn’t have anything to feed the guests. Draupadi prayed to Lord Krishna for help, while the guests were away bathing at the river. Lord Krishna appeared immediately before Draupadi and said he was hungry and asked for food. She said she had prayed because she had no food to feed the guests. Then Krishna asked her to bring the Akshaya Pathra. She did, and lord Krishna took a grain of rice and a piece of vegetable stuck inside the Akshaya Pathra and ate it and said that he is full. As he is the supreme being of all the entire universe, every living thing satiated for that day. The sage Durvasa and his disciples then left after the bath, without returning to the Pandavas.
