In 2021, Varalakshmi vratam is celebrated on the 20, of August, Friday. Varalakshmi vratam is an important Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. The significance of Varalakshmi vratam is explained in the Skanda Purana. The married women perform this vratam to please Goddess Lakshmi Devi and seek her blessings. Varalakshmi vratam is a festival for women. Varalakshmi vratam is celebrated on the second Friday or the Friday before Poornima of Sravana month in the Telugu calendar and Aadi month in the Tamil calendar. According to Puranas, worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on Varalakshmi vratam is equal to worshipping Astalakshmi or the eight Goddesses of Wealth, Love, Peace, Strength, Pleasure, Fame, Learning, and Earth.

Varalakshmi vratam pooja vidhanam:
- Wake up early in the morning and take a head bath. It is considered auspicious to wake up in Brahmamuhartham, just before sunrise.
- Clean the house and decorate the pooja room.
- Prepare the kalasam. You can either use silver or bronze kalasam. Apply turmeric and kumkum to the kalasam. Draw Swastikam on the kalasam.
- The kalasam is filled with water, one lime, coins, beetle nut, and five different leaves.
- Then keep mango leaves at the mouth of kalasam. Keep a coconut on top of kalasam. The kalasam is the symbolic representation of Goddess Varalakshmi Devi.
- The kalasam is placed on a heap of rice. The starts by chanting Lakshmi sahasranamam.
- Naivedhyam is given to the goddess and finally, harathi is given to kalasam.
After vratam, a yellow thread is tied around hands. The kalasam is removed the next day and the water is sprinkled all over the house and the rice is mixed with rice used in the house.
