Story of Balipadyami Festival

According to the myth, King Bali was popular because he was a successful leader. He received help from his guru Shukracharya to achieve this level of almost invincibility. As a result, Bali rapidly succeeded Indra as monarch of heaven. Additionally, Balindra was given the honorary title of Chakravarthi, which means “emperor” in Sanskrit. Bali made the decision to carry out the Ashvamedha Yajna in order to show his power.

Indra begged Lord Vishnu to help him recover his lost heaven. In the persona of the dwarf Vamana, Lord Vishnu attended the Yajna. When Vamana made it, King Bali promptly agreed to his request for three steps of land. The small Vamana quickly grew so huge that words could not adequately describe it.

When Vamana first moved, he covered the entire Earth. The entire sky was covered by his second step. King Bali gave up since there was nowhere to go after the third step. Vamana dispatched Bali to Patala Loka, also referred to as the Underworld. Vamana made King Bali the emperor of the underworld since he was a respected and competent ruler. The Bali Padyami day gave him the blessing of having the ability to dominate the universe for one day.
