Why 2027 carries twenty-five, not twenty-four

Saphala Ekadashi opens the year on 3 January 2027 and returns on 23 December 2027. Both belong to Pausha Krishna Paksha, yet they sit in different lunar years. A Gregorian year simply catches two of them.

So the familiar line about twenty-four Ekadashis per year is about the lunar year, not the calendar on your wall. Count the calendar year instead and you get twenty-five, with thirteen in Krishna Paksha.

How Ekadashi Vrat Dates Are Fixed

Ekadashi vrat dates hang on the tithi, and a tithi is not a day. It is the time the moon takes to gain twelve degrees on the sun, so it can run anywhere from about nineteen to twenty-six hours. Because of that, a tithi rarely lines up with sunrise to sunset.

The rule that settles the fasting day is simple. You fast on the day when Ekadashi tithi is running at sunrise in your own city. Since sunrise differs between Chennai and Delhi by roughly half an hour, a borderline tithi can push the vrat to a different date.

Smartha and Vaishnava: two correct answers

When the tithi overlaps two sunrises, the traditions resolve it differently. Smarta householders take the first day. Vaishnavas usually take the second, which is why ISKCON calendars sometimes print a later date.

Neither is a mistake. Sanyasis, widows, and those seeking moksha are traditionally pointed to the second day as well. If your family has always followed one pattern, stay with it rather than switching because an app disagreed.

The Adhik Maas Error Still Circulating

This is where a lot of published Ekadashi vrat dates go wrong, and 2026 made it obvious. An extra lunar month, Adhik Jyeshtha, ran from 17 May to 15 June 2026. Two bonus Ekadashis appeared inside it: Padmini on 27 May and Parama on 11 June.

Several popular sites got the pair backwards, printing Parama first. Padmini is the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Adhik Maas, while Parama is the Krishna Paksha one. The order matters if you are keeping the Purushottam Maas vrat.

A second, larger error followed. Because some calendars never inserted the extra month into their naming logic, every Shukla Paksha Ekadashi after June 2026 was labelled one month early. Those lists still call 20 December 2026 “Devutthana” when it is actually Mokshada, and Vaikuntha Ekadashi at that.

The dates on those pages are often close to right. The names are wrong, though, and a devotee searching for Devutthana Ekadashi lands on the wrong fortnight. Always check that a list marks the Adhik Maas explicitly.

Parana: The Detail Most Calendars Skip

Breaking the fast correctly matters as much as keeping it. Parana happens on Dwadashi, after sunrise, and before the Dwadashi tithi ends. Yet it must avoid Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi.

Plenty of calendar sites instruct readers to break the fast during Hari Vasara. That advice is backwards, because Drik Panchang states plainly that parana is prohibited then. Wait for that quarter to pass, then eat.

3. Check the sampradaya. An ISKCON or Vaishnava calendar may deliberately show the second day.
4. Check for Adhik Maas. If the year has one, confirm the list names the extra month instead of skipping it.
5. Ask your family purohit. Where two panchangams still disagree, household tradition decides, and that is a legitimate answer.
