Margasira Month is celebrated during the ninth lunar month. This month is called Margasira Month because Mrugasira, the star, is visible on the day of the full moon. Other names for the month of Margasira: Another name for this month is Agrahayana, which means equinox month. In Sanskrit, Agra means first and Ayana means to go. Margasira Month marked the beginning of the year in antiquity. The day the sun enters Dhanu Rashi, also known as Dhanur Sankramanam, is known as Dhanur Masam. This occurs during Margasiramasam.

Margasira Krishna Paksha Dwadashi, or Dhanurmasa Dwadasi, is one of the fortunate days of the month. It falls on the twelfth day of the moon’s waning phase. Devotees believed that bathing in the Pushkarani at Tirumala before sunrise would confer the benefits of bathing in all sacred rivers.

The Pitru Tarpanas are performed on the Krishna Paksha, also known as Bahula Paksha Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami, or the seventh, eighth, and nine days of the waning moon phase of the month of Margasira Masam, also known as Poorvedya, Ashtaka, and Anavashtaka.

Margasira Month’s Ruling God:

  • Keshava is the ruler of the Margasira Month. This month, the sun God known as Mitra is worshipped.
  • We should read or recite throughout the month of Margasira, It is advised to recite the Vishnu Sahasranama every day during this period.
