What is meant by Bhishma Ashtami 2023?

Bhishma Ashtami has a special meaning in Hinduism, and this day is celebrated as a festival. “Bhishma Ashtami” is the name for the Ashtami of the Shukla Paksha of the Magha month. This holiday happens between January and February. The Indian epic Mahabharata’s hero Bhishma is honored on this day. People called Bhishma “Ganga Putra Bhishma” or “Bhishma Pitamah,” but his real name was “Devavrat.” Bhishma is known as “Ganga Putra” because his father was Maharaja Shantanu and his mother was Ganga.

Maharaja Shantanu’s gift to his son Bhishma was that he could pick the day he would die. Bhishma had sworn that he would never get married and that he would stay loyal to his father’s throne.

What is Bhishma Ashtami?

Bhishma left his body on the eighth day of the Hindu month Magh Shukla Paksha. This was the day that is called “the day of the gods.” Bhishma Pitamah left his body on the happy day of Uttarayan, which was the day Lord Surya started moving toward the north after the six-month period of Dakshinayana. People think that if they die during Uttarayan, they will go to heaven.

During Magha Shukla Ashtami, people remember the day that Bhishma Pitamah died. So, the day is called “Bhishma Ashtami” and is definitely remembered as the day Bhishma Pitamah died. The story about that day says that Bhishma stayed in his body for 58 days before leaving.

Bhishma Ashtami Puja Vidhanam:

  • In honor of Bhishma Pitamah, people do something called “Ekodishta Shradh.” People think that only someone whose father has died can do it.
  • But some people don’t believe that, and on Bhishma Ashtami, they can do “puja rituals.”
  • People go to the nearby river bank and do a ritual called “Tarpan” to give peace to Bhishma Pitamah’s soul. In the same way, they honor the people who came before them.
  • People take a holy dip in the Ganges River and offer boiled rice and sesame seeds to break the cycle of life and death and clean their souls.
  • Devotees fast all day, do a ritual called “Arghyam,” and chant the “Bhishma Ashtami Mantra” to ask the deity for help.
  • On Bhishma Ashtami, people worship and take a holy dip in the Bhishma Kund in Kurukshetra.
