The famous Hindu holiday Maha Kala Bhairava Ashtami honors Kala Bhairava. On the Krishna Paksha Ashtami of the Hindu month of Margashirsha, this auspicious event is celebrated. Bhairava Jayanti, Bhairav Ashtami, and other names are also used to refer to it. Bhairava Ashtami is widely observed in both the northern and southern Indian states.

Importance of Kala Bhairava Ashtami:

Devotees worship Lord Bhairava on this auspicious day in order to overcome challenges in life. To impress him, many also keep a tight fast all day. The importance and popularity of Kala Bhairava are stated in the Aditya Purana. Meaning of Kaal Bhairava, and Bhairava is Lord Shiva in human form. The devotees of Lord Shiva worship Lord Bhairava with tremendous devotion, and they annually celebrate this festival with a lot of fanfare. He is a time lord who bestows favors on those who respect time.

Since Lord Bhairava is especially revered on Sundays, it is thought that if Kalasthmi ever occurs on a Sunday, it will be the most divine. On Kalashtami, people celebrate the fate of those who idolized Lord Bhairava with utmost fervor and excitement both inside and outside of India. In Sacred Rivers, people swim on this sunny day. They repeat Shlokas and Mantras in the name of Lord Bhairava while listening to Shiva Kathas. Fruits, flowers, and Madira (wine/alcohol) are offered to Kaal Bhairava to begin the Pooja-Vidhi and the traditional rituals for him.

  • On this day, Vaishnavas perform rituals related to Radha and Krishna.
  • According to popular belief, Radha Kund and Shyama Kund, the ponds named for Radha and Krishna, first appeared on Bahula Ashtami. The ponds are in Vrindavan.
  • Thousands of people visit the ponds on this day to take a holy swim.
  • People believe that the Radhakund is filled with all of the holy waters in the universe.
  • Please remember that in south India, particularly in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the waning phase of the moon is known as Bahula.
