Karthigai Deepam is the most important holiday for Tamil Hindus. It is one of the oldest celebrations that the Tamils have. In the evening of the festival day, rows of oil lamps called Deepam, light up the houses and streets. Both Karthigai Deepam and Karthikai Deepam can be used to talk about the same thing. Karthigai Deepam gets its name from the star Karthikai, also called Krittika. On the day that Krittika Nakshatra is in charge of the sky, Karthigai Deepam is held. Karthigai Deepam is done as a way to show gratitude to Lord Shiva.

Hindu mythology says that on this day, Lord Shiva turned himself into an eternal flame of fire to show that he was better than Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. Karthigai Day is celebrated every month, but it is most important in the month of Karthigai (which is the same as Solar month Vrischika in other Hindu calendars).

People all over know about the Karthigai festival in the Tiruvannamalai hills. On Karthigai Day, a huge fire lamp is set up on the top of the hill. Hindus come to Mahadeepam to pray to God Shiva at the fire, which they call Deepam.

Masik Karthigai Pooja process:

• In Masik Karthigai 2022, devotees get up early to take a holy bath.
• Then, to honor Lord Shiva, a light is turned on in the house.
• For the puja, there are white flowers, fruits, incense sticks, lamps, incense fragrances, honey, cannabis, and datura.
• While they say Shiva Kavach, people fast all day.
• The aarti is done after the puja.
• After worshipping God the next morning, the fast is broken by eating.
