The Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala is home to the Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple, which is situated atop Sabarimala Hill. When does the Ayyappan Viratham/Fasting Start?

  • On November 15, the first day of the Tamil month Karthigai, devotees start their fast.
  • It is not necessary to start the fast on a lucky day or during a lucky week. Devotees can start their Sabarimala trip after fasting for at least 41 days.

  • After doing pooja, Guruswamy, a devotee who has traveled to Sabarimala more than 18 times, will deliver the mala. The devotee is subsequently granted Swami or Ayyappa.
  • Swamis should take two daily baths.
  • Visitors to the Lord must uphold their chastity because he is a brahmachari.
  • The devotee should control their appetite and limit their food intake throughout this time.
  • An Ayyapa is expected to express the truth and refrain from sin over the 41-day period. He must have a total commitment to the Lord.

  • Devotees won’t trim or shave his beard or hair throughout this time.
